The Long Island Flyrodders have been involved in Casting For Recovery Retreats held at
the Connetquot for the past two years. The CFR Retreat is a three day, all expense paid program of
fly fishing instruction open to women who have had breast cancer. On behalf of this wonderful organization I would like to thank all of
our members for their generosity in buying raffle tickets, tying flies, making personal donations and volunteering as River Helpers.
This year Casting For Recovery will be conducting THREE retreats that will be based at the Wyndham Windwatch Hotel, with the final days of fishing instruction to take place at Connetquot. We have recruited volunteer River Helpers from the membership in the past and will be doing so again starting next month at the general meeting.
What is a River Helper? To be a River Helper you must be an experienced fly fisher, dressed in full fishing attire (including waders), be familiar with the CFR program and have completed and submitted a volunteer form. You will not need a rod, but please bring a landing net and wear a vest with tools such as forceps, nippers, etc. You will be required to assist the CFR instructors, and help participants change flies, net fish, etc. A large part of the experience is passing on the appreciation of the things around us that make up the essence of the whole
fly fishing experience.
A detailed "River Helper" job description will be available to anyone who is interested at
our club's general meetings. I will have a sign-up sheet for names with a spot to indicate which retreat you would like to volunteer for. This list will be submitted to Sol Harz who is coordinating efforts with L.I. Trout Unlimited and will forward you the applications.
The three dates (all Sundays) are as follows: July 20th, August 17th and September 14th. For further details see Lee Weil or call me at 516-997-6743.
