OAK ORCHARD CREEK
October 30 - November 2, 2007

We will be fishing for CHINOOK SALMON, BROWN TROUT and STEELHEAD in Oak Orchard Creek, which is a tributary of Lake Ontario near Albion, New York. In addition, you may want to arrange (in advance of the trip) for a guided trip to one of the other Great Lakes tributaries of Lake Ontario or Lake Erie.

TACKLE:  Make Sure You Have a Valid License!

8 Weight or higher fly rod.
Sink tip line for deep holes; floating line otherwise.
Heavy leader/tippet.
Split shot weights- 4 feet up the leader works best at the Oak.
Hook sizes 8-14.
Flies: wooly buggers, bead head nymphs, egg patterns, glo bugs, scrambled eggs .
GOOD rain gear/ 3mm-5mm waders See trip leader for a complete list of suggested items to bring on the trip.

 DIRECTIONS;

    TO MOTEL: (Approximately 440 miles/ eight hours from Nassau)

New York State Thruway to exit 48 – Batavia (or Route 17 to Route 390 to NYS Thruway west). Go North on Route 98 to Albion…. about 16 miles. “NEW” Dollingers is on route 31 west of the intersection of routes 98 and 31.

     TO OAK ORCHARD CREEK:

We will be fishing from the St. Mary’s Archery Club property. We will lead you to the site, but if you want to go on your own (for example on the day you arrive). Take route 98 North out of Albion and bear left onto route 279. Continue to the end over the lake and turn right. Turn right again at Clark Mills Road (the first street sign). Continue along the winding dirt road through a cluster of houses. Turn right into the St. Mary’s Archery Club property and proceed down the hill and park on your right. If anyone approaches you, identify yourself as Long Island Flyrodders.

FISHING PLAN: (Early Tuesday arrivers fish on your own; follow directions above to the Oak)

Wednesday, unless you are going on a guided trip, plan on spending the whole day on the Oak. We will be leaving the motel promptly at 5AM and we will race to the site in order to secure adjoining spots so we can control a section. If a spot turns out to be prime, we will rotate in and out to let everyone catch a “big” one. Fishing can begin at dawn, a little after 7AM. The archery club serves breakfast and lunch for donations. They also have toilet facilities.

TRIP RESERVATIONS

Al Battistelli and Gene Stephens are the Trip Leaders and will be taking names and money (So they know who will be going and can provide a trip list)
A non refundable deposit of $25 is required by the August meeting to secure your spot and to cover the cost for trip hats and a LIFR group donation to the St. Mary’s club.
The trip will be limited to 12 LIFR members... The first ones to sign  and pay up.
Let Al or Gene know as soon as possible if you are interested in a guided trip on Wednesday, October 31.
The guided trip for the group will be on Wednesday. Cost of a guided trip should range from $200 to $225 per person depending on how many go and whether it’s 2 to 1 or 3 to 1 guide. This is a FULL day trip. This price includes lunch and a CD of all the photos of your trip which the guides will take and then burn the CD for you at the end of the day.
